Ukiah Valley Medical Center (UVMC) is a 78-bed acute care hospital serving 113,000 people in Mendocino and Lake counties. UVMC's services include obstetrics, medical/surgical and intensive care units, 24-hour emergency services, outpatient surgery center, hospital-based rural health clinics and state-of-the-art diagnostic services.
In 2008, UVMC had 4,069 admissions, 910 deliveries, 25,400 ER visits and 89,643 outpatient visits. The medical center is staffed by 100 physicians, 645 employees and 60 volunteers.
In 2008, UVMC welcomed four new physicians, broadly expanding local access to care. The medical center implemented a new inpatient dialysis program, allowing families to stay close to home for care. UVMC also expanded rural health clinic services to include ophthalmology and cardiology, and added licensed clinical social workers to the staff. UVMC contributed medical equipment and supplies to missions in Mexico and Guatemala and provided over $8 million in free and low-cost services to the community.
Nestled in the Ukiah Valley, Ukiah is a mid-sized town surrounded by vineyards, pear orchards and redwood-covered hills. Ukiah's strong sense of community is clearly present in its numerous town celebrations, festivals and events, including the Ukiah Country PumpkinFest, which celebrates Ukiah's rich agricultural tradition each October. All sorts of recreational opportunities can be found at Lake Mendocino, just five miles from Ukiah, with over 100 family picnic sites, boat launching ramps, fishing, a swimming beach, hiking trails and much more. For entertainment, Ukiah boasts a number of theatrical companies. The Grace Hudson Museum makes for another entertaining diversion, featuring exhibitions of the works of artist Grace Hudson as well as local, regional and Californian Indian artists.
