The Aroostook Medical Center is based in the city of Presque Isle, Maine located in Aroostook County. Northern Maine is peaceful, friendly and safe, with a true sense of community, and is a terrific place to raise a family. With close proximity to New Brunswick and Quebec, Canada (Presque Isle is just minutes from the Canadian border) you can take advantage of the nearby offerings of another entire country! In this university community, you’ll find many fun-filled ways to spend your free time. This nature lover’s paradise offers enough recreational distractions to keep even the most avid nature lovers and active sports people happy.  

• Recreation
  The warm seasons attract many visitors to northern Maine for kayaking, canoeing and fishing, hiking and backpacking, camping and hunting. Golfers will be excited to learn that nearby Caribou has 10 golf courses to choose from, all within an hour of the city’s center. In the wintertime, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are both extremely popular! The Winter Sports Center, in Presque Isle, has become an international training ground for competitors in the Biathlon (cross country skiing and target shooting). They hosted the 2004 and 2006 Biathlon World Cup as well as the 2005 Paralympics.

  Want to get in shape but still help a good cause? Be sure to participate in the Aroostook Adventure Race. This is a four to eight hour event is designed to challenge participants with a mix of mountain biking, trekking, and canoeing. Created partially to promote a healthier, active lifestyle, this adventure race is perfect for beginners or intermediate adventure racers looking for a memorable experience. Plus, all the proceeds go directly to TAMC’s Lifeline Emergency Response System which is used by over 450 elderly and disabled people in Aroostook County. On a rainy day when you can’t enjoy the outdoors, head to the mall. The Aroostook Centre Mall is conveniently located on Main Street with dozens of stores. Shops range from nationally recognized department chains to more “mom and pop” type stores where you can find unique home décor and gifts.

  Although northern Maine is the corner of the country, you’ll still be connected to the rest of the world! Presque Isle has a convenient commercial airport offering direct service to Boston and other locations daily. If you can’t find the flight you need out of Presque Isle, The Bangor International Airport also offers direct flights to many destinations and airline hubs daily. Yes, you can get there from here!

• Schools
  As you consider moving to Northern Maine, you will want to know that here your children will receive the best education possible. The local school system is ranked in the top echelon of the country, with the High School a recipient of several Presidential Awards. You can choose among three elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. If your high school student needs more of a challenge you may want to send them to the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) located just 20 minutes away in Limestone. MSSM is a public residential magnet school committed to the pursuit of academic excellence. This school provides an extensive and challenging curriculum in mathematics, science, technology, and the arts and humanities. While MSSM students come from diverse backgrounds, one common purpose prevails-the enthusiasm learning. The challenging curriculum and stimulating environment create an ongoing learning experience with students working, studying, and socializing with classmates who share similar interests and goals.

  There are two colleges based right in town: The Northern Maine Community College (NMCC), and The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI). NMCC has 2,000 students has an annual attendance of 2,000 students studying in a wide range of associate degree programs. UMPI is the size of a liberal arts college with the career offerings of a large university with roughly 1,600 annual students. And, if you love the outdoors and the comfort and safety of small town life, you'll feel right at home. UMPI also has a new state of the art athletic facility that is open for use to community members.

• Economy
  The Presque Isle Area boast some of the best opportunities for economic development in the State of Maine and certainly north of Bangor. They are the economic hub of Aroostook County with one of the largest Industrial parks in the area, second only to the Loring Commerce Center.

  Tourism is a major industry in the Presque Isle area, and the Chamber of Commerce has committed to developing better facilities and programs for our visitors with an aggressive Tourism Campaign. They now have the only 24 hour visitor’s center in Northern Maine. The other major industries in Presque Isle are timber, potatoes, and broccoli.

• Real Estate
  When it comes to selecting your home, you can choose from a range of personal lifestyle and residential options. You might enjoy living in a historic 19th century home in town, or possibly purchasing some acreage and designing the home of your dreams! Real estate prices in northern Maine are very affordable, and land is readily available in most directions.

• History / Fun Facts
  Aroostook County is Maine's largest and northernmost county – and it’s the largest US county east of the Mississippi.
  When driving to Presque Isle on route 1 be on the look-out for planets. Between Houlton and Presque Isle, community members have created the largest complete three-dimensional scale model of the Solar System in the World. It is built on a scale of 1:93,000,000 and takes forty miles to reach the Sun from Pluto.
