Organization
Highland Hospital was chartered on September 25, 1955 as a not-for-pr`ofit corporation dedicated to identifying and responding to the emotional and mental health needs of the community. Highland treats patients from all of West Virginia’s 55 counties averaging 100 in-patient admissions per month and 4,500 out-patient visits per month. The Highland family of non-profit companies can provide the best in psychiatric care, therapy, and evaluation services for children, adolescents, and adults through our inpatient, dual diagnosis substance abuse treatment program, partial hospitalization, evaluation, forensic and outpatient services.
Our professional staff includes 7 psychiatrists, 2 internal medicine physicians, 4 Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants, as well as Registered Nurses, Licensed Psychologists, Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Certified Addictions Counselors, Bachelor's Level Psychometricians, and Licensed Social Workers/Case Managers. During the period 2009—2012 we are planning on building a new Psychiatric Hospital and adding 3 psychiatrists, 3 physician extenders, 1 doctorate level psychologist and 6 licensed clinical staff for our outpatient services.
Community
The Charleston, WV area is small in size with a regional population of nearly 200,000 people but big in the amenities provided in such a small community. Winter and summer sports abound, our symphony, ballet, community theatre, and arts enthusiasts have regular schedules of events and activities which bring in audiences from a large area. The West Virginia University School of Medicine has a large training program in the city and there are four universities within a 60 mile radius of Charleston. There is a diverse group of ethnic populations, a large professional work force, and the government center for the State within the community. Our moderate climate offers four distinct seasons with winters bringing little snow to the city but abundant downfalls to the near by ski slopes. Summer heat brings crowds to the nearby lakes and rivers where boating, fishing, diving and swimming are popular past times.
