Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Full time Staff Physician, Primary Care.  The incumbent will spend a substantial amount of time in clinical activities including direct patient care, oversight of clinical nurse practitioners providing medical services to patients admitted to one of several mental health programs, and participation in Medical Staff activities including committee assignment(s).  The incumbent serves as Staff Physician for the Primary Care Service Line.  The incumbent is responsible for insuring quality outcomes of care/service delivery, appropriate access, timeliness, cost effectiveness, and customer satisfaction. The incumbent role models the provision and documentation of quality and cost effective direct patient care that meets/exceeds all clinical guidelines and/or performance measures.    Decisions regarding the incumbents performance will be evaluated based on the incumbents level of success in meeting and/or exceeding goals, objectives and performance measures; the outcome of care/service delivery, and the following core competencies:  Interpersonal Effectiveness, Customer Service, Systems Thinking, Flexibility/Adaptability, Creative Thinking, Organizational Stewardship, Personal Mastery, and Technical Skills. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

Basic Requirements:  Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, with a degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine from an approved school;  proficient in written and spoken English; and have a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the U.S. or the District of Columbia.  Successful completion of post-degree residency in internal medicine or family medicine.  



Education.  Degree of doctor of medicine, doctor of osteopathic medicine, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.  The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements if you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center is located in West Alabama on a beautifully landscaped 126 acre campus.  Tuscaloosa offers a low cost of living and year round outdoor recreational activities along with cultural activities.  Tuscaloosa is the largest metropolitan area in western Alabama and is the home of the University of Alabama.  Tuscaloosa is located 45 miles by interstate highway from Birmingham (the largest city in Alabama) and 225 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.  The community has a major medical center; public and private schools with outstanding academic and athletic programs; affordable housing; extremely low property taxes; and a wide range of professional, social and leisure activities.
Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center (TVAMC) provides primary care, long-term health care and mental health care services to eligible veterans in VISN 7. TVAMC provides access to secondary and tertiary care services.  The Medical Center provides comprehensive outpatient services in Primary Care clinics.  The primary care program offers clinics in women’s health; Preservation Amputation Care and Treatment (PACT); podiatry; neurology; Visual Impairment Service Team (VIST); spinal cord injury and Geriatric Primary Care. The Medical Center has implemented a Care Coordination program which includes: Case Management for the Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) Combat Veterans, Care Coordination/Home Telehealth and other programs cited below. 
The Medical Center operates a 381 bed teaching hospital with 198 authorized nursing home care beds.  The full range of inpatient and outpatient care is provided including Psychiatry (87 beds), a Homeless Domiciliary – DRRTP (48 beds) and a Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program – PRRTP (48 beds).   
TVAMC is located in West Alabama. The facility is situated on a beautiful campus of 125 acres with 25 major buildings.   TVAMC leases space to Indian Rivers, a non-profit community mental health provider serving Tuscaloosa, Bibb and Pickens counties in West Alabama.   
Through an Enhanced Lease Agreement, Hospice of West Alabama is operating in the new 28,000 square-foot facility on 3.17 acres of TVAMC grounds.  This is the first inpatient hospice facility in West Alabama.  It is a beautiful facility with 10 private patient rooms, porches and outdoor living spaces, living areas, a family-style kitchen, a chapel and administrative offices.  This project is a good community partnership that benefits our veterans by providing preference in five of the hospice beds. The facility has an agreement with Hospice of West Alabama to lease them one of our quarter’s (Building No. 8) for use as a family lodging facility. 
There are no current or planned CBOCs.
