MAJOR DUTIES:

The Clinical Pharmacist fills prescriptions by selecting the correct drug and dosage form, reducing the drug from bulk to the quantity prescribed, compounding when necessary, then packaging and labeling the drug in an appropriate manner.  Exercises care in the dispensing of drugs, especially controlled substances, investigational and cytotxic drugs, to assure that legal and agency regulations and instructions are followed, that proper and complete recordkeeping is maintained, ant that the drug storage are are stocked, safe, and secure. Responsible for special formulations, and for extemporaneous compounding of routine and special IV medications requiring complex compounding procedures.  Counsels patients and family members concerning directions for use, side effects, precautions, and the need to strictly follow the regimen.  Monitors patient profiles and ensures information is correct and up-to-date.  Responsible for patient care activities involving drug therapy, recognizing the special considerations of the age and stage of life for the patient, and prescribes medications in accordance with the approved prescriptive authority.  Analyzes data and completes reports, including ward inspections and chart reviews, according to established policies. 

SALARY RANGE: 91,047.00 - 115,341.00 USD /year

NOTE:  Applicants who meet the required criteria may be able to apply for partial student loan reimbursement under the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), subject to available funding.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

U.S. Citizenship; Graduate of a degree program in pharmacy from an approved college or university; Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy; Proficiency in spoken and written English and must meet the physical requirements. 

In addition to the basic requirements, the following is required:

For GS-12, One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

For GS-13, Completion of one of the following: 

1.  One (1) year of professional experience equivalent to or above the GS-12 grade level of federal service or;

2.  Board certification recognized by the American Pharmaceutical Association's Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties.

Applicant's successful practice and length of experience will be considered by a Pharmacy Professional Standards Board in determining the salary of the applicant selected.

The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center is located in West Alabama on a beautifully landscaped 126 acre campus.  Tuscaloosa offers a low cost of living and year round outdoor recreational activities along with cultural activities.  Tuscaloosa is the largest metropolitan area in western Alabama and is the home of the University of Alabama.  Tuscaloosa is located 45 miles by interstate highway from Birmingham (the largest city in Alabama) and 225 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.  The community has a major medical center; public and private schools with outstanding academic and athletic programs; affordable housing; extremely low property taxes; and a wide range of professional, social and leisure activities.
Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center (TVAMC) provides primary care, long-term health care and mental health care services to eligible veterans in VISN 7. TVAMC provides access to secondary and tertiary care services.  The Medical Center provides comprehensive outpatient services in Primary Care clinics.  The primary care program offers clinics in women’s health; Preservation Amputation Care and Treatment (PACT); podiatry; neurology; Visual Impairment Service Team (VIST); spinal cord injury and Geriatric Primary Care. The Medical Center has implemented a Care Coordination program which includes: Case Management for the Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) Combat Veterans, Care Coordination/Home Telehealth and other programs cited below. 
The Medical Center operates a 381 bed teaching hospital with 198 authorized nursing home care beds.  The full range of inpatient and outpatient care is provided including Psychiatry (87 beds), a Homeless Domiciliary – DRRTP (48 beds) and a Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program – PRRTP (48 beds).   
TVAMC is located in West Alabama. The facility is situated on a beautiful campus of 125 acres with 25 major buildings.   TVAMC leases space to Indian Rivers, a non-profit community mental health provider serving Tuscaloosa, Bibb and Pickens counties in West Alabama.   
Through an Enhanced Lease Agreement, Hospice of West Alabama is operating in the new 28,000 square-foot facility on 3.17 acres of TVAMC grounds.  This is the first inpatient hospice facility in West Alabama.  It is a beautiful facility with 10 private patient rooms, porches and outdoor living spaces, living areas, a family-style kitchen, a chapel and administrative offices.  This project is a good community partnership that benefits our veterans by providing preference in five of the hospice beds. The facility has an agreement with Hospice of West Alabama to lease them one of our quarter’s (Building No. 8) for use as a family lodging facility. 
There are no current or planned CBOCs.
