Dubuque is a contemporary city with Victorian charm. As the seventh largest city in the state of Iowa, our residents enjoy a small-town's warmth, friendliness, and freedom from hassles coupled with the conveniences of an urban setting. Offering much diversity, there are 2.6 million within 100 miles of Dubuque.
Situated in a beautiful, natural location along the Mississippi River, Dubuque is known for its steep hills and river bluffs. Settled in 1788 by French Canadian fur trader and early entrepreneur Julien Dubuque, this has been a vibrant river city since the early 1800s. Today Dubuque is a thriving city, with a population of nearly 62,000 people and a county population of nearly 90,000. More than one million tourists visit Dubuque annually to ride the riverboats, learn the history, and see the sights.
The exceptional hospitals, facilities and level of care available in Dubuque have grown with the medical needs of the community. Mercy Medical Center and Finley Hospital are two hospitals that serve the Dubuque area.
The Dubuque Community School District is among the fastest-growing school districts in Iowa, adding over 1,000 students in the last five years. The city also has a large number of students who attend private schools. It also has 3 four year colleges.
While Dubuque has long been a center of manufacturing, the economy has recently witnessed rapid growth and diversification in other areas. In 2005, it led the state and the Midwest in job growth, ranking as the 22nd fastest-growing economy nationally. Today, alongside industry, the city has large health care, education, tourism, publishing, and financial service sectors.
Dubuque has received a number of special designations. In March 2007, the city was recognized as one of the "100 Best Communities for Young People" by the America's Promise Youth Foundation. In April 2007, the city was voted 15th in the "Best Small Places For Business and Careers" ranking by Forbes Magazine, climbing 60 spots from 2006.
