Community Hospital: Fairbanks Memorial Hospital is a JCAHO accredited 152-bed hospital that is the primary referral center for residents of Alaska’s interior. Highlighted services include: emergency care, ICU/CCU, nursery/neonatal ICU, CT, MRI, radiation therapy, sleep center, laboratory, mental health, women’s center and PACE cardiac rehabilitation. In 2005 FMH opened a new, state-of the-art, 57,000-square-foot outpatient imaging center with Alaska's first 64-slice Siemens CT scanner, two state-of-the-art MRI's, two nuclear medicine cameras, digital mammography, as well as ultrasound, general radiology, fluoroscopy, and bone densitometry services. A newly expanded Emergency Department is over 26,000 sq. ft. with 27 new rooms including standard treatment rooms, procedure rooms, isolation rooms with private bath and shower, and two 350 sq. ft. trauma rooms with adjacent staff support space. In December 2007 Fairbanks Memorial Hospital opened a new Cardiac Cath Lab with a state-of-the-art "ARTIS" flat-panel single-plane digital cath lab system.  The Denali Center is a 92-bed facility for short or long-term care that is attached to the hospital.


Medical Staff: Fairbanks Memorial Hospital has 132 physicians on staff representing 21 specialties. Over 98% of the medical staff is board certified. Highly qualified ancillary staff are recruited and retained to ensure some of the lowest nurse-to-patient ratios in the country. Internal Medicine staff is highly collaborative and have diverse interest and subspecialty training.

Location: Fairbanks is the perfect jumping off point for exploring Alaska. Located in the center of the state, you can explore the vast Interior at your leisure, fly north to Prudhoe Bay or the Eskimo village of Pt. Barrow; drive south to visit Denali National Park and Mt. McKinley, North America’s tallest peak; or go further south and spend time along Alaska’s coast fishing, kayaking, or just sightseeing.

City: Fairbanks is Alaska’s second largest city with a population of 88,000 in the city and surrounding area. It is a wonderful blend of city amenities with frontier attitude. Fairbanks has no sales tax, except on alcohol and hotel rooms. Prices in Fairbanks compare favorably with those in many cities elsewhere.

Climate: Fairbanks summers have lots of sun. Long summer days (over twenty hours of sun at the solstice) have temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s . So much daylight means more time to explore the state. While winter temperatures can be cold, successful candidates, will welcome the opportunity to participate in winter sports such as skiing, dog mushing, snow shoeing and snowmobiling. Our location makes for dry weather with little wind and snow can be expected from October through March.

Culture: Cultural life in Fairbanks combines the advantages of a cosmopolitan community with the warmth and friendliness of a small town. Residents can attend a wealth of cultural events including a symphony orchestra, local fine arts and world-renowned theatrical and musical performances year around. The University of Alaska Museum (voted the top museum in the state) attracts an average of 115,000 visitors a year to its natural history and fine arts display.

Education: From pre-school through college, the city offers opportunities to grow. Fairbanks provides educational opportunities at public and private schools as well as a college education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The public school system supports 14,500 students enrolled in 19 elementary, four middle, one Jr./Senior High, and 4 Senior high schools. The combined teacher–student ratio is 1 to 23. The average Fairbanks student placed in the 61st percentile on national standardized test. Over 52% of the districts teachers have master’s degrees and 88% of the Seniors graduate. Students in the district come from 50 different language backgrounds reflecting the districts rich cultural heritage.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) offers 160 degrees in more than 100 disciplines. It is the only doctoral-granting institution in Alaska. UAF is home to over 9,000 students who come from all 50 states and 40 foreign countries to take advantage of small classes, first-rate faculty, affordable tuition and hands-on research. UAF’s unique geographic location and expert faculty combine to give Alaska’s only PH.D.-granting university a well-earned reputation for arctic and northern research on topics such as the aurora, fisheries, global change and high latitude engineering.

UAF’s Rasmuson Library is the largest in the state. It houses 1.75 million volumes and provides electronic access to 5.5 million titles in Pacific Northwest libraries. On the West Ridge of campus, the International Arctic Research Center represents a joint effort of the U.S. and Japanese governments and houses scientists from around the world who work together on global change research. Other unique research centers include Poker Flat, the only university-owned rocket sounding range in the world and the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center
