Decatur County is located in the heart of the south central Iowa. Interstate 35 and Hwy. 2 bisect the county while the Grand River meanders gracefully through our countryside. It was organized in 1850-named after Steven Decatur who was a navel hero from the war of 1812. Leon, Iowa was selected as the county seat and the original courthouse was built in 1854. The area attracted a well-minded collection of settlers diversified by their ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs.
Decatur County has three active school districts, which offer a wide range of classes and extra-curricular activities. Graceland University, a private 4-year liberal arts is also located in the area.
