War Memorial Hospital is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. This Upper Peninsula community is the 3rd oldest city in the United States. With a population of 17,500, Sault Ste. Marie is an area that continues to grow and thrive. Located just across the International Bridge is Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario with a population of 85,000. War Memorial is a 55 bed, non-profit hospital that employs more than 800 individuals and has experienced tremendous growth over the past eight years. The 2007 fiscal year closed with a million dollar profit, while 2008 had a $4 million profit. A profit of approximately $4 million is anticipated in 2009. WMH serves the eastern Upper Peninsula and surrounding area.
A new behavioral health center opened in October of 2007. An addition to the radiology area was completed in May of 2008 with a fixed base MRI unit and a 64 slice CT scanner, which is also utilized for cardiac scans. Digital mammography is currently offered as well. A 30,000 square foot therapy facility also opened in 2008, with a therapy pool, track and state-of-the-art equipment. Expansion and renovation of the OR, ER, lab, admitting/registration and long-term care are in the planning stages. A four story, 40,000 square foot medical office building is currently under construction with completion expected in the fall/winter of 2010.
WMH s clinical services within the hospital include; Cardiopulmonary, Chemotherapy/Infusion Therapy, ICU/CCU, Community Care Clinic, Diabetic Education, Dialysis, Emergency Services, Emotional Illness and Care, Medical/Surgical Units, Obstetrics, Occupational Wellness, Radiology, Laboratory, Rehabilitation and Physician Practices that include women s health care, surgical services, pediatrics, infectious disease, pulmonology/critical care, oncology, nephrology, psychiatry, internal medicine and cardiology. The medical staff has also experienced tremendous growth over the past 4-5 years and additional specialists are currently being recruited.
