Spectrum Health is the region's leader in inpatient care with 60,500 acute care admissions in 2009.Our hospital group includes the Spectrum Health Medical Center in downtwon Grand Rapids, where we offer the regions' only Level I Trauma Center and the region's largest children's hospital, along with many other medical specialty and subspecialty services.In addition, the Spectrum Health Hospital Group includes five community hospitals, as well as outpatient care, through ambulatory surgery centers, laboatories, occupational health, radiology, rehabilitation and sports medicine, sleep centers and urgent care.The Hospital Group also includes Spectrum Health Continuing Care, the region's largest provider of rehabilitative, skilled nursing, long-term acute, home and residential care.
Helen DeVos Children's Hospital
The beautiful new 212-bed Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, which opened in Jaunary, 2011, cares for 7,600 inpatients and 190,000 outpatients annually, with 38,000 pediatric ED visits.The hospital is a regional children's tertiary referral center, is ANCC Magnet-designated and has a 24-bed PICU, a level IIIC NICU with 67 intensive and 36 intermediate beds, ECMO beds and a centralized sedation program that supports radiology, imaging, two endoscopy suites, four procedure rooms and the ED.All patient rooms are private, with bathrooms and sleep accommodations for two parents.The new hospital offers new possibilities for education and resesarch, in addition to clinical care.Expanded facilities and support sytems are available for clinical and translational research, with a focus on moving discoveries rapidly from the laboratory to the bedside to promote best practices in evidence-based medicine.For more information, see:helendevoschildrens.org

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
Housed in the newly opened Secchia Center, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine established the headquarters of the medcial school in Grand Rapids in 2010.The College of Human Medicine is developing the translational arm of research from its base with Spectrum Health Hospitals and The Spectrum Health Medical Group.MIchigan State University also partners with the Van Andel Research Institute in joint recruitment for research and graduate education programs.Together, these institutions are aligning strategy for future investment in research and education.

Van Andel Research Institute
Established by Jay and Betty Van Andel in 1996, Van Andel Institue is an independent biomedical research and educational organization based in Grand Rapids, MIchigan, dedicated to preserving, enhancing and expanding the frontiers of medcial science, and to achieving excellence in education by provbing fundamental issues of education and the learning process.
Van Andel Research Institute (VAI) serves as the cornerstone of the West Michigan biomedical research and life sciences corridor.The past decade has seen more than $1 billion in private and philanthropic investment in research and clinical infrastructure along the "Medical Mile" in Grand Rapids, which includes the VAI, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, the Spectrum Health main campus and MSU's Secchia Center.The Institute's diverse staff and researchers come from around the world to fight disease, and partner with laboratories and organizations across the globe.The science and methods are complex, but the goal is simple:to make a difference in the lives of patients and families by solving the mysteries of human disease.
