American Samoa Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC)

One of the many places where VA Pacific Islands Health Care System (VAPIHCS) provides care is American Samoa. American Samoa is a U.S. territory covering seven South Pacific islands and atolls. Tutuila, the largest island, is home to the capital Pago Pago, whose natural harbor is framed by volcanic peaks. American Samoa is a beautiful place full of tropical scenery, rainforests, beaches, and reefs. However, it is also an extremely remote part of the Pacific Ocean with no other American territories or states nearby.

Providing care in remote areas is a challenge, and this challenge is compounded by the small population. With only 55,000 people, the population is not large enough to keep a medical specialist like a Cardiologist or an Audiologist busy. In the past, specialists have visited American Samoa whenever possible to help deliver care. COVID-19 made this type of solution impossible, and so everyone is eager for travel restrictions to end.
