Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas
Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas (CHC/SEK) is a Federally Qualified Health Center and a Kansas Not-For-Profit Corporation.
CHC/SEK began in 1997 on the second floor of a 90-year-old elementary school as a community outreach program to ensure that all children were “ready to learn” by providing physicals and immunizations regardless of their parents’ ability to pay. CHC/SEK quickly realized these children’s parents and grandparents needed care too. We expanded our services and facility to provide quality, affordable healthcare to patients of all ages. By 2003, CHC/SEK became an independent organization with 11 employees that cared for 3,300 patients annually. Today Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas employs more than 600 employees and serves 60,000 patients annually. Throughout Southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma, CHC/SEK has 15 full service sites, 37 NHSC qualified sites, and more than 45 affiliation agreements with area schools.
Our mission: Provide quality affordable and accessible healthcare to anyone regardless of ability to pay.
This mission stems from a quote that is on the back of all employee name badges, is posted throughout our clinics, and is the heart and soul of what we do. “Do all the good that you can, for all the people you can, in all the ways that you can, for just as long as you can.” This is a quote from Mother Mary Bernard Sheridan, a Sister of Saint Joseph, who in 1903 brought healthcare to the poorest in our region, building a hospital on donated land and providing care for all.
Our growth has come from listening to our communities and providing healthcare services that truly make a difference. Over the years we’ve added a wide variety of services including medical, dental, behavioral health, addiction treatment services, and more. We transform healthcare by addressing and working to remove the barriers our patients face.
CHC/SEK has more staff benefitting from NHSC loan repayment than any other health center in Kansas.
Our HPSA Scores:
17: Primary Care
21: Mental Health
