The Duluth Clinic was founded 1915 by five Duluth physicians who joined together to form one of the first multispecialty clinics in the United States. In 1981, Lakeside Clinic joined the Duluth Clinic, which had grown to employ over 400 physicians in 17 locations across Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin. In 1997, the Duluth Clinic merged with St. Mary’s Medical Center to become SMDC Health System, and in 2011, SMDC integrated with two other health systems to form Essentia Health.
