Morehead is located in northeastern KY directly off Interstate 64, within an hour’s drive from Lexington/Central KY and Huntington WV and within two hours from Louisville KY and Cincinnati. This university town can be found in the foothills of Daniel Boone National Forest and eight miles from Cave Run Lake, an 8,300-acre lake known nationally as the Muskie Capital of the South. Cave Run Lake provides an abundance of recreational facilities for all water sports and boating activities, camping, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, and nature study. It is an extremely clean and unspoiled recreation area.
The community of Morehead has a cosmopolitan flair with access to the four-year University programs, theatre productions, art displays, and concert recitals, in addition to the Kentucky Folk Art Museum, and various year-round cultural events rich in the traditions of the past like the Storytelling, Poppy Mountain Bluegrass, and Harvest Festivals. Morehead/Rowan County serves as an economic hub for northeastern Kentucky. The Commonwealth of Kentucky designated Rowan County to receive over $5,000,000 to purchase and develop one of Kentucky’s first regional industrial sites. Administered by a six-member regional industrial board with representation from Rowan and three surrounding counties, the site is located five miles from Morehead on over 500 acres. Rowan County’s new industrial park is considered to be the most significant and promising industrial site in Kentucky.
St. Claire Regional Medical Center opened its doors on July1, 1963, as a general acute care hospital with 41 beds, 9 nurses and 6 physicians representing 3 specialties (General Practice, Surgery and Internal Medicine). Today, St. Claire is much more than just a hops ital, it's an integrated healthcare system know as St. Claire HealthCare.
St. Claire HealthCare (SCH) is the largest employer in the region with nearly 1,200 staff members including more than 100 medical providers representing 32 medical specialties. It includes the largest rural hospital in Northeastern Kentucky with 159 beds, 7 family medicine locations within 5 counties, a multi-specialty medical pavilion, an outpatient center, homecare services including family medical supply, pharmacy and aesthetics.
SCH also partners with UK Health Care to offer services at services at the More head Cancer Treatment Center and More head Women's Health Care. SCH serves as an established training site for the UK College of Medicine's Rural Physician Leadership Program (planned expansion to 4 years anticipated in 2021).
