St. Joseph Berea
A rich history, vibrant creativity, and continuing vision combine to make Berea a compelling destination. Berea is featured as a Favorite Small Town in Southern Living magazine and as one of the best places to escape to in National Geographic. Berea College is consistently a nationally top-ranked school with exemplary students not only from Kentucky but more than 60 countries. World-renowned artists and craftspeople operate more than 40 shops and studios. The legacy of this town was established in 1853 when a wealthy landowner donated property to establish an anti-slavery church, and Berea became a haven for social equality. In the 1890s, Berea was attracting attention as an arts community. Today, the thriving community of artists, students, and progressively minded individuals has a legacy marked by a commitment to community, creativity, social justice, and environmental responsibility.
