History and Culture

Our experienced health care professionals know that patients need more than expert medical care. For more than 100 years, we have made comprehensive, high quality health care available to more than three generations in our community, so you can enjoy the superior wellness resources a healthy lifestyle requires with the compassionate care you deserve.

UM UCH is fortunate to have a highly qualified medical staff and excellent health professionals. With advanced medical and surgical equipment at their fingertips, they are dedicated to providing the highest quality care in a setting that is conducive to healing.

We believe that patients who are at ease, rested, and in a nurturing environment heal more rapidly. Patients at our two hospitals benefit from a holistic approach to care that integrates traditional medicine with complementary therapies.  Our mantra is high quality care, every patient, every encounter, every day.

Boasting a tradition of caring for the community for over a century, University of Maryland Harford Memorial Hospital (UM HMH) in historic Havre de Grace is a treasure that blends old and new exquisitely. Havre de Grace is a small city on the banks of the Susquehanna River, with beautiful views of the waterfront, tree lined streets, Victorian homes and a lovely sense of community. With a rich history of its own, our hospital is a perfect fit in this community.

We opened our doors in 1910 in a 21-room Victorian home and at that time, the population of Harford County was approximately 29,000. Today, the population stands at nearly 250,000.

UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center is located in the heart of Bel Air. The state-of-the-art medical center provides the latest advances in medical technology in a healing and compassionate environment.

Our premier health care facility incorporates several trends that reflect how health care is changing, including reorientation towards outpatient care, more acutely ill patients in the hospital, and flexibility for growth and change to meet our community's future health care needs.

All of our patient rooms reflect a patient and family-centered model of care, creating an atmosphere in which the patient and family or support person can be together at all times in a comfortable, relaxed, and private setting. The rooms feature a home-like decor and were designed to enhance the healing process and make the needs of the patient and family the main priority.
