  • Direct Patient Care: 90% of the time involved in direct patient care.
    • Work in General Medicine Clinics (GMC) to cover for a panel of patients as well as other Same Day Clinics that would typically be seen at that clinic.
    • Assist with telephone coverage for primary care programs. If needed, additional coverage may include activities as a Call Center Doctor in partnership with the Telephone Advice Nurses.
    • Provide outpatient primary care including assessment and care of new and returning patients with multiple medical problems (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, COPD, chronic pain, basic mental health conditions), review alerts, provide consultations, order diagnostic studies, medications, and other therapies as medically indicated, provide preventative health maintenance education to patients and caregivers.
    • Perform basic procedures including but not limited to steroid joint injections and liquid nitrogen.
    • Complete all required VA computer documentation including clinical reminders, screening, and alerts. Work will involve substantial computer-based tasks in the VA Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
    • As part of the Primary Care Team, collaborate with Registered Nurses, clinical associates (usually an LVN), and clerical associates. The team members will look to the provider for the treatment plan for patients on their panel.
    • Requests necessary tests, follow-up visits, and refers patients to specialists, as necessary.
    • Clinic Responsibilities: Contractor personnel shall be present as documented by physical presence in the clinic at the scheduled start time.
    • Medications: Contractor physician(s) shall follow all established medication policies and procedures. No sample medications shall be provided to patients.
    • Discharge education: Provide discharge education and follow up instructions that are coordinated with the next care setting for all emergency department patients.
  • 10% off of the time involved in Administrative duties
    • Quality Improvement Meetings: If applicable, the contract personnel shall participate in continuous quality improvement activities and meetings with committee participation as required by the VAPAHCS Chief of Service, Chief of Staff, or designee. Meetings will be on an as-needed basis and will occur during regular working hours.
