VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System

VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System Logo

The Department of Veterans Affairs recognized the need for an expansion of Veterans' health care services in Deep South Texas and approved the formation of a new health care system encompassing twenty counties comprised of the Laredo, McAllen, Harlingen, and Corpus Christi service areas.  The name of this new health care system is the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System (VATVCBHCS) and this new system officially activated on October 1, 2010.  The VATVCBHCS leadership team now manages its budget independently from the VA in San Antonio.  Decisions on the expansion of programs, hiring of staff, and other key issues are now made locally.

Community-Based Outpatient Clinics

In addition to the VA Health Care Center at Harlingen, we offer services in five community-based outpatient clinics and 2 PACT clinics. These clinics are located in —

Laredo, Texas
McAllen, Texas
Harlingen, Texas
Corpus Christi, Texas

Harlingen is known as “The Tropical Playground of Texas”.  Harlingen is a diverse city that offers warm weather year-round and a very reasonable cost of living. In 2019 Harlingen had a cost of living that is 25% less than the national average http://coli.org/quarter-1-2019-cost-of-living-index-released/. This is partially due to the absence of a state income tax, very reasonable home costs and cheaper food and goods costs. There is always something to do in the Harlingen area, whether it is the museums, restaurants, or heading to South Padre Island which is 50 minutes away.  There is also an abundance of nature and outdoor activity opportunities within a short drive.
