Wabash General Hospital
Wabash General is a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital in Mt. Carmel, IL. CAH status allows the hospital to receive better reimbursement for Medicare patients, assuring its financial stability. The area does meet the requirements of rural health scholarships and loans. Wabash General Hospital has a very successful scholarship program that has produced over forty current employees from talented local students. These include two orthopaedic surgeons, a family practice/sports medicine doctor,a pediatrician, a pharmacist, a physical therapist, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, nurses, technicians and others. These professionals are all under the age of 40 and have developed a collaborative team that is getting very high marks in patient outcomes and patient satisfaction. Wabash General Hospital also scores high in Press-Ganey where they have received two national awards, CMS, IHA, regional, and national hospital evaluations.
Wabash County, Illinois is a very peaceful place to live. It is bordered by the Wabash River on the east which is the border between Illinois and Indiana. Mt. Carmel is 20 miles north of Interstate 64 which is the corridor from St. Louis to Louisville, Kentucky. Mt. Carmel is 45 minutes from Evansville, Indiana and all that a metropolitan area of 250,000 residents has to offer including the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana where large Universities and shopping are available. Wabash County is a very family oriented county. It offers a number churches along with excellent education opportunities with your choice of a public or a private grade school, a high school, and Wabash Valley Junior College. Well organized youth programs for football, baseball, softball, soccer, gymnastics, etc. are available to all ages. The Wabash Valley Junior College has nationally recognized teams in men’s basketball, men’s baseball and especially ladies softball teams. The Mt. Carmel High School football program is recognized statewide for its’ highly competitive teams winning the state championship once and finishing second three times. The Girl’s basketball team is ranked highly in the state. The college and high school programs are highly supported by our communities. Wabash County also offers areas for indoor and outdoor recreation such as a well maintained and regionally recognized 18-hole golf course, Beall Woods State Park features miles of trails within the largest existing stand of virgin forest in the State of Illinois. Bicyclists and walkers are common sights. The city owns and maintains an outdoor public swimming pool, and an indoor pool is available at Wabash Valley Junior College. Mt. Carmel is located just north of Interstate 64 that allows easy driving to larger regional cities like Louisville, KY, (2 hours), Indianapolis, IN (2 1/2 hours), St. Louis, MO, (3 hours), four hours from Nashville, TN, and five hours from Chicago.
