Nowata, OK is a town of approximately 3,700 located in Nowata County; Nowata also serves as the county seat. Nowata served as a train stop for Native Americans being resettled by the government. Lenape Tribesmen named it “nuwita,” meaning “friendly” or “welcome.” In Cherokee, the town had a name that was roughly translated to mean “water is all gone,” hence Nowata. It is located near Bartlesville, OK, the home of Frank Phillips and Phillips Petroleum. Also nearby is the town of Oologah, birthplace of Oklahoma’s Favorite Son, Will Rogers. Nearby are also several lakes, including Oologah Lake.
