Critical Care Intensivist – Northwestern Virginia, Shenandoah Valley


A hospital employed group of 8 fellowship trained board certified intensivists is seeking critical care medicine intensivists to join their established critical care intensivist program at a 411-bed, Level 2 trauma center and regional referral center located in northwestern Virginia .

The medical surgical ICU is 48-beds and is located in the state of the art critical care tower built in 2012.  This is a high acuity ICU with 3,300 annual ICU admissions and growing cardiothoracic, vascular and neuroscience programs.



Intensivists provide in- house 24 /7 coverage of the 48- bed medical surgical ICU using a shift staffing model with 12-hour day shifts, 7am to 7pm and  12-hour night shifts 7pm to 7am.  Seven day blocks are Thursday to Thursday.

Intensivists work approximately 15 shifts a month, 182 shifts a year, 7 days on and 7 off and  1 week of nights every 4 weeks.

The ICU is staffed by 8 intensivists and 6 ACNP’s.  Daytime staffing is 4 intensivists and 2 ACNP’s. Night staffing is 1 intensivist and 1 ACNP. 



The medical center is a 411-bed, Level 2 trauma center and regional referral center. 

The medical center is part of a 6 hospital regional health system serving a population of 450,000 in northwest Virginia, eastern West Virginia and Maryland.  The system has a combined total of 594 inpatient beds and 166 long-term care beds.  It is supported by 4,500 employees and a medical staff of over 500.



Northwestern Virginia, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley is home to the Appalachian Trail and Shenandoah National Park. Outdoor life and 4-season recreation is big here: fishing, hunting, skiing, and cycling. The area is also rich in history, from the Colonial era and Revolutionary War with numerous Civil War battlefields and sites.   

 It is 56 minutes from Dulles International Airport.  24 miles south of Martinsburg, West Virginia and 25 miles north of Front Royal, Virginia.      



The intensivists are employed by the health system physician group.    Compensation is competitive with a base salary and semiannual quality bonuses.  The comprehensive benefits package includes malpractice, health insurance, reimbursable CME and a generous relocation allowance.
