Carilion Stonewall Jackson has long served the Rockbridge County Virginia community as an independent, not-for-profit organization established to meet the primary health care needs of the public. Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital’s heritage dates back to 1890 when a public infirmary provided basic care to local residents. Then, in 1904, the Mary Custis Lee Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy announced plans to purchase General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s home from Jackson’s widow and establish a hospital in memory of the Civil War leader. Jackson Memorial Hospital opened its doors on June 1, 1907. When the expanding health needs of the community had outgrown the limited space, the UDC transferred the assets of Jackson Memorial hospital to a new board of community members, which established the Stonewall Jackson Hospital on its present Spotswood Drive site in 1954. Since then, the hospital has undergone several expansions and renovations, including the creation of a two story wing in 1983. In 1998, recognizing the limited space for new equipment that was available for rapid changes in health care delivery methods, the SJH Board of Directors chose to build a new five-story building connected to the 1983 wing. The flexibility to adapt to continuing changes in the healthcare field, such as telemedicine and medical information technology applications, have been designed into this new, state-of-the-art facility. The exterior style and interior ambience promote cutting-edge technology and services, while remaining true to the hospital’s natural surroundings and blending with the historic nature of our local architecture. Today CSJH is proud to be a part of Carilion Clinic and home to 34 Active Staff Physicians, 11 Courtesy Staff Physicians, 38 Consulting Staff Physicians, 10 Allied Health Professionals and 350 employees of the Rockbridge area.
