Metairie is the first suburb of New Orleans, Louisiana, and is located on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain between the cities of New Orleans, with its wonderful French Quarter, Superdome, Aquarium, Zoo, and Convention Center, and Kenner, where the New Orleans International Airport, Rivertown, and the Pontchartrain Center are located. Metairie has its own French Quarter near many of the cityGÇÖs hotels, but it is more than just a few blocks of townhouses and cottages standing side-by-side, up against the sidewalk. The size of the Metairie district startles even those well traveled in the rest of the nation. In this French Quarter a melange of people moves about at all hours of the day and night. Bars have no closing hour, the food is spicy, and the music pulsates almost everywhere. Some say that the locals talk funny but seldom have southern accents. Neighborhood restaurants offer bold creative chef-owners, the autumnal brass band parades in central city neighborhoods, and young lions of jazz dominate the local scene as well as the world beyond during the recently created Jazz and Heritage Festival. All of this testifies to the remarkable power of the culture of this city to absorb new influences and fashion delights that continually amaze not only much of the world but the inhabitants of New Orleans themselves.
