Picayune has a claim to fame, which is that it is the only city in the world to bear this unique and historical name, a fitting attribute for this beautiful small town of 12,000. The town is actually named after a newspaper, the New Orleans Daily Picayune (a Picayune is a Spanish coin commonly used in the Spanish colonial era). Situated along Hobolochitta Creek, which feeds the Pearl River, Picayune offers gently rolling hills, a mild sub-tropical climate, short mild winters, and clean air and water. It is an idyllic place to live, work, and play. The weather is very favorable for gardening, and the area offers freshwater fishing for bass, bream, catfish, and white perch. Saltwater fishing is only 40 miles away. If you are a hunter, the area abounds with white-tail deer, turkey, and small game. The community also hosts the Crosby Arboretum, the premier native plant conservatory of the southeastern United States, as well as other attractions such as theatres, parks, and street fairs.
