Highlands Regional Medical Center

Highlands Regional is the largest hospital within a five-county region. The 126-bed modern facility is located on US 27 South near the southern city limits. Opened in 1965, Highlands Regional Medical Center has grown to a 126-bed acute care hospital with over 100 physicians of nearly all specialties on staff. In the last several years, more than $9 million has been invested on major renovations, including an 11,000-square-foot outpatient center, a refurbished operating room and emergency room, and new diagnostic equipment. Also included is the addition of the Women’s and Children’s Center. Throughout the additions and renovations, the hospital has positioned itself to provide the latest in medical services and technology in a wide range of healthcare disciplines.

In 2007 a newly expanded emergency department was opened. The Emergency Department consists of thirteen treatment rooms, including a specialized trauma room. The team of specially trained medical and nursing professionals sees about 15,000 patients a year for everything from minor illness and injuries to major trauma. The fast-paced unit is a designated initial trauma-receiving center for Highlands County. The department provides triage and stabilization and begins treatment for patients with major trauma, neurological accidents and heart attacks. A helipad is located on campus allowing the occasional transfer of patients with severe trauma to Tampa in a mere 30 minutes. The hospital is located on US 27 approximately 2 hours south of Orlando and 2 hours east of Tampa.
