THE HOSPITAL
Patients are hospitalized at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage, Wisconsin (population 8,640). JCAHO approved with a commendation, Divine Savior is approximately 15 minutes from Poynette Family Practice Clinic, and roughly one mile from Portage Clinic. The hospital is licensed for 60 beds and has an average census of 15 patients per day. On-site, Divine Savior has a level-one nursery; an MRI and a CT scanner; two radiologists; a three-bed ICU; and full-time ER coverage, with approximately 11,500 ER visits per year. The hospital also has complete Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Communicative Disorders, and Sports Medicine departments; and offers full pulmonary and nuclear medicine services.
THE COMMUNITY
A population of almost 2,000, the Village of Poynette is a growing municipality, located in Columbia County. Area residents enjoy a full range of employment opportunities, one of the largest being their local vegetable canning industry, which offers seasonal and permanent positions. Their diverse economy is also supported by the Poynette School District; a local humidifier and air filter manufacturer; several metal fabrication and machining companies; a plastic injection molding firm; a power company maintenance facility; and a counter top fabrication company. Like most rural communities, agribusiness plays an important role in Poynette. In addition to their local cooperative, area residents enjoy the unique Mackenzie Environmental Center and Game Farm.
The Poynette School system provides area children with full K- 1 2 facilities known for their outstanding academic programs. Consistently, Poynette's standardized test scores average in the nation's top 25 percent. Scoring above the state average on ACTS, 67 percent of Poynette High School's students go on to attend post-secondary educational institutions after graduation. When class is out, the school system offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including indoor swimming programs.
The community boasts two libraries. The Poynette Public Library recently moved into its spacious new facility on Main Street. Joining them in the near future will be the Poynette Historical Library. Both represent the shared commitment and pride residents have dedicated to the project, working together to establish a new building for these fine community resources.
All of the mainstream religious denominations are represented in Poynette, or in the surrounding communities. One local clergy group is noted for having established several housing developments for low-income elderly residents.
When it comes to leisure and recreation, the "Poynette ... Naturally" motto says it all. Located in the rolling glacial hills, just south of the Baraboo range, Poynette residents enjoy a picturesque setting. Lake Wisconsin (three miles away); Devil's Lake, and numerous small lakes provide year-round recreational opportunities in and around the water. And, Wisconsin's "# 2" trout stream, Rowan Creek, bisects two parks in downtown Poynette.
