Upstate Carolina Medical Center’s firm commitment to excellence is reflected in the fact that the hospital has twice earned a "with commendation" rating when the hospital was accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Health Care Organizations. With board certified physicians and highly trained staff with advanced certifications in their own specialties, UCMC has been providing outstanding health care to the city of Gaffney and Cherokee County since 1988. As an acute care facility, their 125-bed, 122,000 square foot hospital is able to meet all but the most complex healthcare needs. The services offered to the community range from medical, surgical, women’s care and pediatrics to intensive care and orthopedics. Even more impressive is the fact that the hospital houses state of the art equipment and the finest advanced wound care center in Cherokee county.

Upstate Carolina Medical Center has the county’s only emergency department featuring an annual volume of 28,000 with 24 hours of physician coverage and 12 hours of physician extender coverage. This hospital is being setup for tax purposes as an independent contractor facility. With emergency care being highly specialized, the ER staff is headed by a board-certified emergency care physician and the nurses have advanced certification in emergency and trauma nursing. Backed by the resources of a full-service medical center, the emergency department can handle most medical problems from cuts and sprains to chest pain and trauma.

The staff of UCMC call Gaffney, SC home and each year the hospital contributes an annual payroll of nearly ten million dollars to the local economy. The hospital also contributes hundreds of thousands in tax dollars and provides millions in medical care to indigent and charity patients annually. Gaffney is located in Cherokee County, in the Upstate region of South Carolina and as of the 2000 census the city had a total population of just under 13,000. Over the last ten years, Cherokee County has grown dramatically, with new businesses and industries choosing to locate in this conveniently situated community halfway between Greenville, South Carolina, and Charlotte, North Carolina on I-85. Spartanburg, South Carolina, is only a short drive, too. The county boasts a thriving educational system, with a newly constructed Gaffney High School and many recently constructed elementary schools. Limestone College, a private liberal arts college founded in 1845, also calls Gaffney home.
