Position Purpose: 

  • To complement the administrative leadership of the Executive Director, the Hospice Medical Director will provide the essential clinical leadership role for the Hospice and Palliative Care programs at CaroMont Health and Gaston Hospice and Palliative Care. 

 

Essential Duties and responsibilities: 

  • Collaborating regularly with the Executive Director regarding effective leadership strategy for Gaston Hospice and Palliative Care 

  • Attending staff meetings as required by the Executive Director 

  • Overseeing the clinical rounds at the 19-bed inpatient hospice unit (Robin Johnson House) in Dallas, NC 

  • Maintaining privileges at CaroMont Health Regional Medical Center Campuses 

  • Acting within the scope of medical practice 

  • Complying in a timely manner with all in-service requirements of CaroMont Health and Gaston Hospice 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

  • Providing leadership for interdisciplinary team meetings 

  • Serving as collaborative physician for the Advanced Practice Providers providing active clinical services for patients within the Palliative and Hospice patient panels 

  • Providing on-call guidance to nurses serving the acute needs of the hospice patients within Gaston Hospice 

 

Job Requirements 

  • Compassion for patients with serious illness or terminal illness and their families   

  • Communication with leadership, and all support staff   

  • Clinical Acumen attentive to end of life care and symptom management 

  • Creativity in challenging clinical scenarios 

 

Education: 

  • MD or DO   

  • Additional Certification in hospice and palliative medicine with either a Fellowship in HPM or Hospice Medical Director certification (or both) 

 

Experience: 

  • Prior experience in hospice and palliative medicine 

  • Prior leadership preferred

  • PI project experience  preferred

  • Quality measure experience 

  •  

Skills/Abilities: 

  • Effective communication skills to interact with multiple clients including referral sources, other local physicians, hospital physicians, specialists, and all members of the interdisciplinary team 

  • Leadership skills 

  • Intricate understanding of the Medicare and Medicaid guidelines for hospice eligibility and the conditions of participation for Hospice 

  • Familiarity with the “Serious Illness Conversation Guide” 

 

Language Skills: 

  • Ability to effectively communicate regarding the hospice and palliative roles 

  • Run team meetings 

  • Lead family meetings regarding goals of care 

  • Discuss Advance Care Planning
