The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine in conjunction with IU Health Physicians Pathology is seeking a highly motivated Pathologist/Clinical Microbiologist to oversee bacteriology testing within the Division of Clinical Microbiology at the Indiana University Health Pathology Laboratory (IUHPL). The IUHPL, which is located in downtown Indianapolis, serves as a centralized anatomic and clinical pathology testing facility for numerous Indiana University Health hospitals, including 5 Indianapolis metropolitan hospitals, and clinics throughout the state of Indiana. Overall, the IUHPL performs roughly 14 million diagnostic tests annually, and it is staffed by approximately 60 full-time pathologists and clinical scientists. Laboratory leadership are world-renowned experts in their respective disciplines who also serve as IU School of Medicine faculty.

The Division of Clinical Microbiology utilizes the latest in infectious disease diagnostics, including laboratory automation, and routinely evaluates emerging technologies in order to best serve our continually expanding patient base. The high specimen volume and broad diversity of infectious diseases diagnosed by our laboratory lends to numerous educational opportunities. As such, the Division offers both an ACGME-accredited fellowship in medical microbiology and a CPEP-accredited post-doctoral fellowship in medical and public health laboratory microbiology. Additionally, there are educational opportunities offered by our pathology residency, clinical laboratory science, infectious disease pharmacy, and adult and pediatric infectious disease training programs. The Division also actively participates in industry-sponsored research and development, including FDA clinical trials for new laboratory instrumentation and diagnostic tests.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will serve as an Associate Medical Director of the Division of Clinical Microbiology. In this role, the candidate will oversee the daily operations of the bacteriology section of the Division; however, additional opportunities, including directorship of an additional laboratory, may be available. The candidate will also be expected to share on-call responsibilities for the Division’s Infectious Disease Pathology consultation service. Involvement in the industry-sponsored research and development program is optional.

Applicants must have an MD/DO, MD/PhD, PhD or equivalent degree and be board-certified or board-eligible in Medical Microbiology by either the American Board of Pathology or American Board of Medical Microbiology.
