What surprised you about your first post-residency job or job search? There are a lot of positions out there. It is very different compared to applying to residency. Especially for primary care, there is a shortage, so employers want you. It is important to set your own filters, such as location, hours (weekday only, or including weekend or evening work).
What’s your advice for residents who are beginning their job search? Start early. The interview process is different for different hospitals/ clinics. Some are as short as one initial Zoom interview then an on-site interview, while others are multi-step interviews. Keep in touch with your senior residents who have graduated. My seniors gave me tips and a list of questions to ask (salary, 401(k), loan repayment offers), which was very helpful. They do not teach you this during residency.
What was the most important factor in your search for a new job?
Location, location, location. Born and raised in the Bay Area, I knew I wanted to return after medical school and training.
How did PracticeLink help you in your job search? A recruiter reached out to me to ask if I was interested in inpatient as well, and if I was open to other locations.
Any other advice? Have fun! It sounds like a lot of work (no pun intended), but the right job is out there for you. Just go to interviews and ask a lot of questions to help you narrow down your choices. •
