What surprised you about your first post-residency search?

What surprised me most was the diversity of opportunities available within my field. I was taken aback by the range of practice settings, from academic institutions to private practices, and the varying levels of autonomy and support each offered. Additionally, I was surprised by the importance of networking and personal connections in the job search process, as well as the significance of negotiating terms beyond salary, such as work/life balance and professional development opportunities. 

What’s your advice for residents who are beginning their job search?

Begin by defining your career goals and understanding your strengths, passions and areas for growth. Network actively, both online and offline, to tap into opportunities. Stay resilient, as job hunting can be challenging—but most of all, trust the process

I sought out the positions that not only highlighted my skills and expertise but also offered opportunities for growth and fulfillment.
