This ongoing series, hosted by PracticeLink Director of Graduate Medical Education (GME) Outreach Director Charley Lowry, focuses on the journey to become a physician — from med school through residency and fellowship. These episodes, released weekly, consist of Charley leading a thoughtful discussion with healthcare professionals who share tips and insightful information from their own medical journey to inform and provide priceless guidance for the next generation of prospective healers. Medical students, residents and fellows can all benefit from the candid conversations, which are often based on questions and topics directly supplied by those who are in the early steps of their healthcare careers.

MARIELA ALVAREZ-SOSA, TODAY’S PODCAST GUEST
As the founder of Lucid, Mariela brings her extensive knowledge of provider recruitment, contract negotiation, compensation reviews, and practice options to healthcare providers making their next career transition. Mariela’s unique coaching style has garnered her the respect of her peers and made her a trusted ally to healthcare systems seeking to grow their clinical workforce, executives and physicians at all stages of their careers. Combining her unique communication style and skills molded from extensive knowledge in the field and her background in HR, business development and marketing, Mariela focuses on the concept of UpCoaching to hone on her clients’ career coaching needs. She also works with healthcare systems nationwide consulting in the areas of physician alignment, recruitment and engagement strategies, and provider recruitment process improvement.
Prior to launching Lucid, Mariela worked for Memorial Healthcare System, one of the largest public healthcare systems in the nation, as their Vice President of Physician and Provider Recruitment and Engagement Strategies where she had oversight of system-wide physician recruitment and onboarding initiatives for all service lines. During her tenure at Memorial, Mariela built a recruitment division from the ground up which was responsible for all physician/provider talent acquisition activities, including branding, sourcing, recruitment and onboarding.
Before joining Memorial, Mariela served as Associate Administrator for Florida Medical Center, a Tenet facility. At FMC, she had oversight of strategic planning, program development, physician relations and physician recruitment, and was responsible for leading service line comprehensive marketing and communication campaigns and spearheading the hospital’s rebranding initiative. She held similar roles for HCA and other Tenet facilities. She began her career at the University of Miami where she last served as Director of External Relations and spearheaded projects between the university and city government, was responsible for campus-wide events and worked closely with Spanish-language media to represent research and colleges at the University’s main campus. Mariela received both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Miami. She holds several certifications: SPHR, CPRP, PPMC and has served as Vice President of the Southeastern Physician Recruiter’s Association and frequently presents at educational conferences on the topic of recruitment processes, talent acquisition and employer branding.
Charles (Charley) Lowry currently serves as the Director of Graduate Medical Education (GME) Outreach for PracticeLink. Before PracticeLink, in his role as Statewide Campus Director, Charley worked directly with medical students and residents at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. In his current role, Charley provides all the necessary tools and resources for residents/fellows to be successful in finding their first practice after residency. He frequently collaborates with residency directors and coordinators across the country to provide free PracticeLink resources to their programs including webinars, CV reviews and in-person presentations of First Practice: The Resident and Fellow Career Guide.
